Thermal water in rehabilitation and reeducation.

Thermal water in rehabilitation and reeducation.

An important support to traditional medical therapies, water rehabilitation promotes fast motor recovery: physiatrist and neuropsychiatrist Dr. Gianfranco Marchesi, a member of the Scientific Committee of Terme di Monticelli, explains why.

Practices that placethermal water at the center of rehabilitative therapies have been known since ancient times, appreciated by physicians and physical therapists alike, and by patients: they stimulate motor recovery, affect muscle strengthening, and enhance self-sufficiency.

They are used in the orthopedic and neurological fields, in the treatment of traumatic injuries post immobilization, as in the post-surgery of the various anatomical districts: shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and spine.
From rheumatology to traumatology, thanks to the results obtained, the water rehabilitation has fully entered the care pathways.

Hydrokinesitherapy in motor rehabilitation: what is it and what is it for?

Hydrokinesiotherapy uses the chemical and physical properties of thermal water to reduce pain and muscle contracture, strengthen muscles, re-educate functional resumption of voluntary movement, and stimulate coordination and balance,” Dr. Marchesi explains.

The first principle on which it is based is the absence of gravity: “The natural lightening of body weight, given by immersion, allows the performance of exercises and manipulations with a slight degree of stress on the musculoskeletal system.
It is possible, therefore, to apply the technique with reduced stress and with the muscles completely relaxed, allowing postures and gestures unthinkable outside the water.”
With gentle and consistent exercises, the patient recovers faster and without pain, with an ideal cadence of two or three sessions per week.

If, then, the advantages of working in the absence of gravity are combined with the physicochemical benefits peculiar to the thermal water salso-bromo-iodine thermal water of the Monticelli Spa the recovery is even more immediate: “The thermotherapeutic effect produced by immersion in thermal water reduces muscle contracture and pain through a specific action on sensory skin receptors.”

Complementary treatments.

The possibility of also associating, under medical supervision, other traditional rehabilitation techniques such as massage therapy and gymnastics, makes the rehabilitation process at Terme di Monticelli a sure path to the recovery of one’s motor self-sufficiency.
“The treatments and care paths that Terme di Monticelli can make available to patients are very rich and well integrated with each other,” Marchesi concludes.

The Monticelli Spa is affiliated with the INAIL for cycles of spa treatment and motor rehabilitation.
